The California Missions Resource Center (www.missionscalifornia.com) website was first developed in 2003 by David J. McLaughlin, author of Soldiers, Scoundrels, Poets & Priests: Stories of the Men and Women Behind the California Missions. The purpose of the site is to provide interesting, useful and accessible information about all aspects of the fascinating California Missions.
As an active member of the California Mission Studies Association, McLaughlin has used his extensive network of contacts among the association members, mission and borderland scholars, and fellow authors to assure the site is comprehensive and accurate and to answer hundreds of questions from site visitors, many from young students working on class projects. Questions have covered a range of topics—the Native Americans who became neophytes in the missions, daily life in the missions, the missions in art and the movies—and a score of others. An archive of these questions and answers is available in the site's Ask the Experts feature.
A photographer as well as an author, McLaughlin also produced Images of the California Missions in CD format (2004), led a team of mission scholars who developed the popular California Missions Collector Card Set (2005) and created The Illustrated Time Line of Junípero Serra's Life in 2006. All are published by Pentacle Press and, like the website, are image-rich and reader-friendly. McLaughlin and Pentacle Press underwrote the entire cost of the development and major update of www.missionscalifornia.com. They also continue to provide a substantial amount of the website’s annual operating costs.
www.missionscalifornia.com sells Pentacle Press products via a link to the company's store. Product sales partially defray the website’s operating costs, however the site’s primary focus is education, not sales. All items sold on the site are intended to expand and enhance understanding and appreciation of the California Missions. Pentacle Press plans to continue to offer this website as a resource for students and their parents and teachers as well as to visitors from all over the world.
