On June 3, 1770 an elaborate ceremony was held on the shores of Monterey Bay when Fr. Junipero Serra consecrated the site of the second California mission and dedicated it to St. Charles of Borromeo. The altar erected under an oak tree had been given to the expedition by the Viceroy. Uniformed soldiers and sailors from the San Antonio, anchored nearby in the Bay, formed a square facing the altar. The artist Leon Trousset recreated this scene in this 1870 oil painting.
