The Spanish constructed four presidios or forts along the coast of Alta California, in San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey (the province's headquarters) and San Francisco. In October 1816 a Russian scientific expedition arrived in California. The expedition artist, Louis Choris made this sketch of the San Francisco Presidio during the expedition's month-long visit.
