The missions were connected by a primitive dirt road grandly called El Camino Real, or the Kings's Highway, stretching some 650 miles from San Diego to Sonoma. This mural depicts a caravan traveling along El Camino Real. This first California road later became a stage road and ultimately the route roughly followed by U.S. Highway 101. One of the few original stretches left is just north of the San Luis Obispo cemetery.
