At the peak of the mission era, each mission property controlled thousands of acres of land, as much as 40-50 square miles. There were over 300,000 head of livestock (primarily cattle and sheep) on far flung ranchos. An elaborate system of sub-missions (asistencias), ranchos and Indian villages covered the territory. This painting by Henry S. Ford depicts a village with a chapel and visiting priest.
