19th century paintings not only recreated special events and captured the missions and presidios in their prime, they were used to plan restorations. In 1894 an artist named Fred Behre was commissioned to paint San Juan Capistrano as it existed before a massive earthquake destroyed the Great Stone Church in 1812. Over the decades architects have quarrel with his tower design and placement, but Behre had done what all good artist do, help us imagine a time and a place long gone.
