05-12-1772 – The Dominicans agree to a take over responsibility for the Baja California missions, through a decree, freeing up the Franciscans to concentrate on Alta California.

09-01-1772 – The first mission in the land of the Chumash people, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, is founded at the village of Tilhini.

12-01-1772 – Fr. Serra travels to Mexico City to clarify his authority and bolster support for the Alta California missions from 1772 to 1773.
