01-12-1777 – Mission Santa Clara de Asis is founded in the land of the Ohlone people. The neophytes ultimately include the Bay Miwok, Tamyen, and Yokuts.

02-01-1777 – The seat of government for Baja and Alta California is moved to Monterey.

11-29-1777 – Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe is established with 68 men, women, and children. A central purpose of the civil settlements is to provide food for the army.

1777 – Felipe de Neve becomes first Civil Governor of California from 1777-1782. He reorganizes the administration of finances, streamlines regulations, and takes steps to grant the neophytes a greater role in mission management.
